Video logging has many different, practical uses in today's world. The technology is seriously high-tech, even compared to a mere decade ago. With the explosion of social media and the Internet available through a wide array of tablets and smartphones, the human race is now more connected than ever. But what does that have to do with video logging for future generations? Michael Keaton (the original modern-age Batman) once appeared in a very heart warming movie, My Life, about a terminally ill man who prepares for his death. In the movie, Keaton shot a series of videos for his young son to watch later in life, such as shaving tutorials and moral life lessons. This type of thing obviously doesn't happen only in movies. Former star Safety for the New Orleans Saints, Steve Gleason, is currently deteriorating due to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and is chronicling his life for his son while there's still time. This is the type of thing that many of us do not want to think about, but death is an inevitability, and what we leave behind will stand as the ultimate measure of our time on this planet. Leaving messages for your loved ones is a great use of video logging, and something that can really touch and improve the lives of those who watch the journal entries in the future.

Reasons to Chronicle Your Life for the Future

Your Loved Ones

What will your children and grandchildren think of you when you're gone? What if you pass from this world unexpectedly and have nothing to pass down? For the sake of your loved ones, and to impart wisdom and life lessons on the people you're leaving behind, a video journal can really convey the type of message you want to get across. It also allows other people to realize that you did care for them deeply, and it allows them to be closer to you in spirit even if they cannot be close to you physically. The generations to come can learn invaluable lessons from you.

To Keep a Legacy Alive

How people remember you is one thing, but how you really are is another thing entirely. People's memories can be very tricky, fickle and impressionable. “Out of sight, out of mind” is a clichéd saying for a reason. The further removed you are from someone, the less they remember about you. You can keep your legacy alive by chronicling your life in videos. You can give people keen insight to who you truly were as a person. You can get your hopes and dreams out there, your beliefs and principles. You can create and display your own legacy rather than having other people do it based off of their impressions of you. You can be in control of how you're remembered, even after you're gone.

To Make a True Mark

Though Achilles is just a mythical figure in Homer's tales, the character was famous for wanting to be remembered in history. That was the reason he fought battles – it was for the glory. The same holds true with real figures throughout history, such as Julius Caesar, the Pharaohs of Egypt, and many Kings and Queens throughout history. You may not be a warrior or in a position of ultimate power, but you can still leave your mark on history by recording your life for future generations to see. Think about another 100,000 years. Where will the human race be? Will we rely on written word at all? Will we have trended to--or even beyond--digital media completely? Your video log may be the device that allows you to leave your mark on this world. We all have a very limited amount of time on this world. What we do with it doesn't have to stop when we do. Keeping a video log for future generations can help you live on throughout history, touching and changing people's lives long after you're gone.

To Tell The Truth (according to you)

These days we are leaving a lot of information and evidence about ourselves on websites like Facebook and Twitter, not to mention other sites such as Flickr, YouTube and the list goes on. The fact of the matter is that at some point if someone in the future wanted to find out about you, they could probably find masses of information and get a pretty good picture about who you are as a person and what your life looked like. You might think that this is good enough, there are photos, there are videos, but what these miss most of the time is the real story behind what happening. Your truth about your life, and there's no better way to tell it than to record your story as it is now. That way, future generations can see and hear your story right from the horse's mouth as they say.
